HOW DOES THE IMMUNE SYSTEM FUNCTION?

It is a network of cells, organs and chemicals working together to defend the body according to three basic functions.

First, the body such as the skin or the mucous membrane of your nose, mouth, lung and gut acts as a protective barrier or barricade to keep out invading microbes.

Second, when the barrier is breached, the next line of defence called innate (inbuilt) immunity recognises the problem and quickly swings into action by attacking the invaders.

Third, to remember what it did, it calls upon another line of defence called adaptive immunity to build an even more powerful defence system against any repeated or future attacks.

To function well, the immune system works as one in balance and in harmony. But things can go wrong such as in individuals with advancing age, when you become ‘run-down’ or exposed to lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor diet, psychological stress and sleep deprivation. When this happens the immune system becomes dysfunctional resulting in symptoms ranging from a mere irritation to deadly disease.

What can you do to rejuvenate the power and balance to your immune system?
Modulating the immune system or so-called immunodulation to keep it functioning well is one such strategy. Immunomodulation is a natural process that mirrors a normal function of the immune system. It works by raising immunity in a person with a low or depressed immunity and likewise it helps to normalise immunity in a person with an overactive immunity. It will, however, have little effect in a healthy person.

Looking at the scientific evidence, IMMUNOSTIM contains naturally-occurring lactoferrin and a mushroom-derived polysaccharide-K (PSK) substance which have been reported as having immunomodulatory properties. Individuals with weak immune systems benefited most from these products designed to act on cells of the innate and adaptive immunity, respectively. Underpinning the benefits of IMMUNOSTIM is the scientific evidence demonstrating their ability to naturally increase the body’s production of molecules, known as cytokines, which regulate or balance the immune system. In some cases, reduction in cytokines involved in inflammation is also seen.
